| End of Year summary thoughts |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|08:58 am] |
There was a lot to hate about this year. There was also a lot to love about this year.
Overall: it was a "fair" year, despite all the bad that happened to my family, and around me. Not because we lacked bad news, but in most cases the news could have been so much worse.
2010 won't have to work hard to beat this year, though.
As for me: most of my problems are short term (although a few are permanent), and while things could be better: I am a very lucky man to live as I do, where I do, with the health I have, and with family and friends that are so vital and important to me.
I wish everyone a hope for a Happy and Safe New Years Eve celebration, and my strongest wishes for a 2010 that is wonderful. |

| Busy Day |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|08:28 am] |
I've got a lot on my plate today here at home.- The day started off early, as Denise went off to get a mammogram. Somewhere in the back of my head I'm developing some dumb Scrubs-like site gag that turns it into Mammy-gram (a telegram delivered by a plantation-style "Mammy"). I suppose Family Guy could get away with this stupid non-PC joke... but I should just let it go.
- Hopefully my new monitor will arrive today, and I can hook it up, and then install Windows 7.
- I need to pack up a Christmas geek-toy that didn't work, and send it back to Think-Geek. They gave me a one week window for my RMA.
- I need to prep my green-screen area for painting. This involves coarse-sanding the Masonite. I also need to buy some primer.
- Toward the end of the day there will be some party in the common house, which will also mark my 16th wedding anniversary... and then to sleep perchance to dream.
Happy last 0.2% of 2009 Everybody. I hope it is wonderful! |

| Oh 2009... go away. |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|12:02 am] |
"We should go back to sleep, Tasha, nothing's really happening." "True, but somewhere someone needs our adorableness, Abby!"
I'm having one of those days when Incompetence lurks around every corner waiting for an opportunity to pounce on me. Little things and big things... small and large frustrations all snowballing into me being rather angry and frustrated with the world. Things that shouldn't be a problem, things that aren't rocket science, things that are really just simple as pie or simpler: Incompetence says "FU!"
Little things... Such as buying bananas. I put them in the cart. I put them on the belt at the register. I got home and couldn't find them. I looked all through my car. I checked the receipt. Apparently the Produce Gnomes stole them before they could be rung up. So at least I didn't buy the bananas I failed to bring home. Of course, I really want a banana now. Merf.
Luckily, there's a Monster Cat and there are kittens. Currently all three are mostly asleep in my office. Oops, Tasha woke up and is wandering over. She must know I'm writing about her. Abby is, however, blissfully unconscious. She's the heavier sleeper. They are getting bigger - probably 6-7 pounds each at this point - but they're still not as big as Mr. Paw. Mr. Paw is probably weighing in at about 18 pounds these days.
(Taking a moment to save this draft before Incompetence decides to visit me here. Ah, there. Better.)
How were your holidays? I had snow for Yule and Christmas, which made me happy. I was in Maine with family and saw friends too! Not my usual road trip about the countryside but still a fun trip. Santa loves me and so does my family and I love them all back. I got some lovely, thoughtful, fun and useful gifts. I had a lot of fun baking this year too. I took better notes so I can be better organized next year.
So it's the day before the last day of 2009. I don't usually care much about the changing of the year... after all calendars are just an arbitrary system imposed on the universe by us humans and really represent nothing more than a way to count things and the New Year is just a psych-out trying to trick you into thinking that you can start again. But this year? Yeah, 2009, I'm pretty much done with you. I've learned a lot and won't make some of the same mistakes again. I had some fun and some not-so-fun. There are accomplishments I can add to the Big List and there are some failures as well that I won't soon forget. (I will listen to my friends' advice... especially when they independently agree with each other.)
But again, luckily, there are cats. New kitten pictures start here on Flickr. Tasha snores so cutely. And then farts. Thanks, Tash.

| Dogfish Head at Redbone's tonight . . . |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|02:22 pm] |
If I was a beer geek *and* in Boston tonight, I would be at Redbone's any time after 5 p.m. for a wide variety of tasty Dogfish Head beers.
Trust me on this one. |

| Life, And Stuff |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|10:56 am] |
I've realized that, even when I'm posting here regularly, I don't actually talk much about what goes on in my day-to-day life. I write about specific projects that I chronicle for my own awareness, or the witty or alarmingly noteworthy bits of work, or a book or movie that caught my attention for a little while, but there's very little about what goes on in my day-to-day world.
Mostly, this is because I tend to assume no one out there actually cares very much about what goes on in my day-to-day world. I've always been kind of envious of the people who do write normal, my-life-today journals, because I figured people must care about them so much more, to want to know that kind of minute detail about their life.
On the other hand, I write this for myself, too, as much as anybody else, and there's probably some future-me who's going to glance back and read this in three or four years and want a reminder of what the heck was going on. And heck, maybe someone does want to know. Stranger things have happened.
( Hidden, though, because it's long and likely not that exciting.... ) |

| Funny Pictures |

Here is an amusing link to some funny (Ironic) pictures... some of which I've seen before, and a few of which I know to be photoshopped.

Here are some pictures from this evening.
I had a good time tonight visiting with some SCA folk, including the magnificent Lorenzo.

| And so it was done |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|09:09 pm] |
I went to the Funeral Mass for Wolfie today - it was nice to see all sorts of people I no longer (or rarely) see: but the circumstances just sucked.
It was important to go: friends go, even when they are not called to go.
I'll keep my thoughts about the Mass itself private - but I do think the priest could have used some of the latitude he had in the exercise of his office.
The church, however, was strikingly beautiful if a bit aged. Quite a surprise.
Oh: I left the house late (ex-wife was late getting Anna) and in my hurry eschewed a coat because I was wearing a suit. Sad mistake. I set speed records on the way there - leaving the driveway the GPS said I'd arrive 18 minutes late. I arrived 1 minute late, largely because of having to walk around the entire large cathedral to find the correct entrance. |
